TESTIMONIALS

A gripping and powerful narrative of what it is like for a mother to witness a budding and progressive mental illness in her son. Despite him living half a world away, the author is relentless in her devotion to her son. This book is a must for anyone coping with mental illness in a family member.

Dr. Scott Barshack, Psychiatrist

A powerful and engaging read. This is a deeply moving story of a mother’s love, as her son navigates through the treacherous waters of mental illness. Those who love someone affected by mental illness will feel deeply understood, and others will develop a deeper understanding of this challenge that effects so many families.

Equal parts amazingly compelling and absolutely crushing. This book grabbed me at the first page and didn’t let go - until I had read it in one go! Such a powerful story of a son’s ultimate struggle and a mother’s undying love.

This narrative seamlessly blends poignant storytelling with profound emotional depth, leaving an impact that lingers long after the last page.

Tara Thelen,

artist and translator

Dive into this captivating journey of a remarkable young man battling his inner demons within a health care system ill-equipped to help. Amidst her own fears and limitations, his mother’s unwavering love and presence shine as a testament to resilience and unconditional love.

She witnesses her son’s struggles in the trajectory of his life - from graduating from UC Davis, teaching the MCATS to prospective, international medical students, to being captured by Hezbollah - to living on the streets of Seattle.

This heart-wrenching narrative eloquently captures the poignant path countless families endure as they attempt to navigate the turbulent waters of supporting a loved one in crises. Brava to Carol Emery for sharing her son’s story, as well as her own, with brutal honesty and courage.
